Hawaiian Hand Applique Club

Debe Thomas

Many of us have a Bucket List of "Quilts or Quilt techniques" we want to try. On my Bucket list is doing Hawaiian appliqué the traditional way. In this club, we will be learning the traditional method for Hawaiian appliqué: how to trace the pattern onto the fabric and cut it out, lay it on the background fabric, and baste and stitch it. Once stitched on to the background, we will layer it onto batting and backing and hand quilt by the traditional Hawaiian method.

We will use Poakalani Hawaiian Quilt Cushion Patterns and Designs, Volume 3. The pattern we will start with is "Ulu", the Hawaiian word for breadfruit. This is usually the first quilt made for the home to ensure there will always be food in the house. For those who are a little timid, there is the "Ti leaf" pattern.
